Wear your city

In short, the city has been transformed into fabric, a garment to be worn or used in an intimate and everyday environment. It happened in the workshop “The city on us” organized by Museion together with the volunteers of the Rotonda (La Vispa Teresa association). The initiative was born around the Cubo di Garutti, Museion’s smaller “brother” in the Don Bosco neighborhood of Bolzano, which for over ten years has hosted exhibitions of the collection and specific projects that aim to involve the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

The new laboratory was inspired by a double thread: on the one hand, the Soleil politique exhibition, currently underway at Museion, which invites us to rediscover some monuments of the city of Bolzano. On the other, some works from the museum’s collection, in which the city and the urban environment are represented using fabrics and fabrics, such as the tapestry by Fortunato Depero or the t-shirts of the German artist Jochen Gerz.

The participants in the workshop carried out a real tour through the symbolic places of the history of Bolzano: the route started from the neighborhood they were familiar with, that is, the last little house of the Semirurali di Don Bosco (former Dux district), and then passed through Piazza Tribunal, Piazza Vittoria, for the Civic Museum, the Mercantile Museum and finally Museion.

Shapes, architectural details and images “captured” in memory were then reworked and transformed into a model from which to start to create real glimpses of the city to wear or decorations for intimate environments with fabrics, fabrics, buttons and lace. The places belonging to the collective memory were thus transformed into objects closer to the private sphere. The result is an incredibly creative and precise work, into which the group of workshop participants poured all their sartorial skills with a touch of personality.
