Museion Passage

Twenty years after its opening, Museion presents an exhibition dedicated to Piccolo Museion - Cubo Garutti that reflects on the value of public art in the contemporary world and looks at the present and future of this special piece of architecture in Bolzano’s Don Bosco district. The work was commissioned by the Department of Italian Culture at the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and created in 2003 by the recently deceased artist Alberto Garutti (1948 - 2023).

What is public space and how does its meaning change when art shines a light on it? How is the Piccolo Museion living the present and what can it look forward to in the future?

This tribute exhibition stimulates considerations on the characteristics of artistic projects in public space and the challenges triggered by their different contexts. Piccolo Museion - Cubo Garutti therefore becomes part of the exhibition itself and an object of reflection, dedicated – in the words of Alberto Garutti himself – to “all passers-by who stop to look, even for just an instant”.

The exhibition is curated by Frida Carazzato and consists of a large installation, conceived by Angelika Burtscher and Daniele Lupo (Lungomare). The installation is divided into different levels or stories that contain visual, auditory and textual content with the aim of introducing different experiences of the Cubo to its Museion and Bolzano audience.

The first level is visual and consists of a series of large format photographs taken by Roberta Segata. Arranged monumentally throughout Museion Passage, these photos show the Cubo and the surrounding district at different times of the day. The perspectives plunge the viewer into the local area, deliberately reversing their gaze and turning them into the Cubo itself that observes the architecture around it.

The second level is auditory. This takes the form of short recordings that tell the story of the Cubo through the voices of the artists, associations and local inhabitants who, over the years, have been directly or indirectly involved in the projects created within it. The sound editing was conducted by the artist, Stefano Bernardi.

The last level is textual. Here, the Bolzano author, Maddalena Fingerle, gives the Piccolo Museion a voice and lets it tell its own story in a short previously unpublished script. The written word, in the form of captions in space, has always played an important role in Alberto Garutti’s work. It is the key that brings the artwork and its audience together, by explaining its concept and literally spelling out its intentions. For this reason, the voice of the Cubo that Maddalena Fingerle has given life to, is located at the opening of the installation.

Inside the installation it is also included the drawing Piccolo Museion – a work by Alberto Garutti, part of his series of projects in public space – and a new addition to the catalogue, published in 2014 to mark Cubo Garutti ‘s 10-year history. This supplement, designed by Lungomare, continues Piccolo Museion’s story with the projects that have been staged there from 2015 up until today.
