Educational Complex Onwards 1995-2008

Exhibition
17.01.—19.04.2009

Educational Complex Onwards 1995-2008 is the first significant anthological exhibition held in Europe since 1997.

Mike Kelley (Detroit, 1954) is considered today one of the most interesting exponents of the world of international contemporary art, a key figure for exploring the “dark side” of American society. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Educational Complex, a 1995 work made up of all the school buildings in which Mike Kelley received his education. In this representation, the empty spaces correspond to the places of which the artist has no memory. For Kelley the work introduces a new phase in which autobiography and memory become privileged tools of that specific deconstruction of structures and instruments that appears in his works since the end of the Seventies.

The exhibition presents installations, paintings, photographs, sculptures and archive material from 1995 to 2008 that testify to this evolution. The selected works are exhibited for the first time in the same context, or, as in the case of the 2007 Hobart II installation, they can be seen for the first time. Educational Complex Onwards 1995-2008 shows the works and artistic practice of Mike Kelley from a new perspective contributing significantly to the understanding of his work. The exhibition also constitutes an opportunity to delve into themes such as youth and education.
