Francesco Vezzoli is Museion’s guest curator for 2016. The artist opens the new season on 29th January with a double event: as guest curator, presenting an exhibition of the Museion collection, and as artist, with the first retrospective of his sculptural work. Both exhibitions are entitled “MUSEO MUSEION” and will take in the entire exhibition venue.

Francesco Vezzoli, who is one of the most highly acclaimed Italian artists on the international scene, is known for ironic, impeccably irreverent works that forge a special dialogue between past and present. Whether it’s pop culture, the international star system or the art history establishment, Vezzoli loves to deconstruct, subvert and undermine systems from within. In Bolzano, in the role of curator, the artist is presenting the first themed exhibition of the Museion collection, linking it up to historical masterpieces.

Vezzoli is the fourth guest curator at Museion: every year an external curator is invited to present a thematic exhibition. Since 2012 the guest curators have been Rein Wolfs, now director of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in the Federal Republic of Germany, Carol Yinghua Lu and Liu Ding, critics and curators, and Pierre Bal-Blanc, director of the Contemporary Art Center in Bretigny, Greater Paris, France, and now a member of the curatorial team of documenta 14.
