The title of the sculpture created by Ingrid Hora (b. 1976, Bolzano), The Great Leap Forward, refers to the economic and social reforms launched by Mao Zedong between 1958 and 1961.

The artwork consists of a row of joined up walking frames that can only be used by a line of people moving together. The installation therefore references the gap between the post 1980s generation and those who lived through those reforms and are now too “old” to find their place in a world that has radically changed.

By altering the design of this device, the artist also calls into question the concepts of progress, dependency, collectivity and solitude in relation to history, ideology and economy. As is common in her works, here, Hora has redesigned an everyday object to focus attention on the revolution or resistance involved in certain acts while also underlining the value of community.

The Great Leap Forward is one of the artworks presented at the Piccolo Museion-Cubo Garutti as part of the European project “Art Works! European Culture of Resistance and Liberation”, an initiative established to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The works exhibited touch on the issues raised by the project and reflect on the art of contemporary resistance. The works were selected together with the artist Alessandra Ferrini, who was invited by Museion to help a group of young people from the local area reflect on the themes presented in this European project.
