New appointment between sound and image in the exhibition “Intermedia. Archive of New Writing”

Which artist has never waited for his “big break”? In this film, entitled The Great Occasion (1973), the artist Ugo La Pietra experiences and recounts firsthand the contradictions of the “cultural operator” in comparison with the structures that produce culture, in this case the prestigious Milan Triennale.
In the film the author’s voice almost disappears, swallowed up by the symbolic void of the building where the artist would finally have his (big) opportunity.

In his work La Pietra addresses the individual’s relationship with urban space, its dynamics and its structures, even in an ironic way. The work was presented for the 1973 edition of the Triennale in the design section curated by Ettore Sottsass. In the Intermedia exhibition, the film appears within the focus on film production and experimentation, including in the performative field, conducted by many artists present in the New Scripture Archive.

Ugo La Pietra (1938, Bussi sul Tirino, Pescara. Lives and works in Milan) is an architect, artist, designer and theorist. During his career he frequented the spaces and activities of the Salt Market managed by Ugo Carrega and subsequently entered the collection of Paolo della Grazia.
