Recording actions and events limited in time: what is taken for granted for us today, for artists only began to become an opportunity in the Seventies, with the “new” video technique. In the Museion collection, together with “historical” positions of artists such as Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Gordon Matta Clark and Dan Graham, we find artists such as Bill Viola for whom video art, while maintaining the character of research and experimentation, has acquired greater awareness of self.
Moving closer to our times, the theme of narration is instead addressed by artists such as Mario Garcia Torres and Deimantas Narkevicius, while the “border” is at the center of the works of Sonia Leimer and Stefano Cagol. Others focus on socio-political aspects such as Quando & Calzadilla and Francesco Jodice. Finally, Francesco Vezzoli dedicates himself to a sort of deconstruction of cinematographic language, broadening his attention to television language as well.

Photography

This section documents the different approaches of contemporary artistic photography, which range from photographic documentation of the actions of Austrian artists such as Günter Brus, Otto Muehl and Rudolf Schwarzkogler of the 1960s and 1970s to works by artists devoted to the conceptual spirit such as Vincenzo Agnetti, Heinz Gappmayr, Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark. In some artists, as in the case of Roni Horn, the photographic medium is a pretext to document the fickle nature of human identity and also the inevitable change of places and landscapes. Artists like Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans offer intimate details of their private lives, while with Joan Jonas and Vera Comploj they address the theme of the body and gender issues. Finally, the works of Zanele Muholi and Santu Mofokeng testify to the opening of the collection towards non-European artists.
